This week, the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Boris Johnson, is working with the Government and sports sectors to reduce the stakes of betting companies in English football. However, the English clubs still want the continuity of partnerships with bookmakers. The Prime Minister is trying to update the UK Gaming Law 2005.

However, the situation is giving something to talk about in Europe and in the rest of the world as well. It is not new that bookmakers have a notorious space within the sports market. After all, the sector has thousands of connoisseurs who usually make guesses and speculate about sporting events, causing the betting industry to expand continuously. However, the sport has already surpassed the virtual world and has reached several partnerships with clubs around the world, including the English Championship, the Premier League.

According to information from a news portal, the betting market moves around £ 14 billion in the UK. Online transactions amount to around £ 6 billion. The numbers are consistent with the years 2018 and 2019, and there may be some changes in the year 2020 due to health restrictions. However, online betting has remained steady in its operations, with a huge increase in the sector. As such, there are many bookmakers who partner with football teams, eight of which belong to the Premier League. English bookmaker partner clubs are Burnley, Crystal Palace, Fulham, Leeds, Newcastle, Southampton, West Ham and Wolves. Through this, the Newcastle club, which has a strong partnership with bookmakers, points out that one of its main sources of income is the advertising that involves bookmakers. However, with the proposal of the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, that source of income could suffer a sharp drop.

Despite all this, English teams are fearful of these possible changes to the 2005 Gaming Law, as they could greatly affect the income of these entities. In the meantime, officials say they cannot rule out the possibility of partnering with bookmakers due to the financial crisis that is plaguing the entire world, including the sports sector.

In the second half of 2020, there was a discussion about the Gambling Law in the United Kingdom, where they mentioned that bookmakers could no longer display their brands on the uniforms of English teams. The purpose of the proposal was to try to reduce the number of bettors, alleging the health crisis factor. But at the end of 2020, the Prime Minister's government again opened a discussion on the subject, where Johnson said that the Games Law should undergo a review and be updated by March of this year. However, the entire discussion had not reached a final agreement. In the meantime, English clubs are waiting for new information on how bookmakers will perform in football.

The UK Government's Digital, Culture, Media and Sport Department, reported that the situation should be analyzed carefully, so that no entity involved would be harmed by the possible new legislation, stating that: "We are currently undertaking a comprehensive review of gambling laws to make sure they are fit for the digital age and a public call for evidence is open for contributions".

On the other hand, Premier League chief executive Richard Masters said: "If there needs to be a rebalancing, that is fine, but we do not think there should be a prohibition on sponsorship of football clubs or other sports clubs, for that matter."

Another important person in English football, Rick Parry, president of the EFL, pointed out in some points, saying that: "It would be potentially catastrophic if it came in overnight. It would create major difficulties. Phased in over time, frankly clubs would need to find a way to adapt. If any changes were to come in quickly, major problems would arise."
